Theme - The theme of the poem is that no one, no matter how powerful they are or how hard they try, can escape the ravages of time. Shifts - The first shift of the poem happens between lines 8 and 9, where it shifts from the perspective of the traveller describing the statue, to Ozymandias himself, whose grandiose arrogance pop from the poem, then, in the final three lines, quickly reverts to the traveler's tone of the first eight lines. This stark image shows the harsh realities of time, even on the greatest works.Īttitude - The speaker uses an ironic tone through the poem, especially in the last 6 lines, where he points out "nothing beside remains", thus highlighting the shortcomings of Ozymandias in the face of time. ![]() Imagery - Line 14 - "The lone and level sands stretch far away" It juxtaposes the arrogance of a man who thinks himself immortal with the stark effects of the literal sands of time. This exposes the irony of the Pharaoh's hubris. Juxtaposition - Lines 11-12 "Despair/Nothing beside Remains" This quote sends the story back to the time of Ozymandias and shows how he thought himself invincible and above the rules of mortality and human limitations. Quotation - Lines 10 - 11 - "My Name is Ozymandias. This line characterizes the person behind the statue, showing that he had a tough hand but ultimately a good heart. Juxtaposition - Line 8 - "The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed" The human attributes of the statue shows how the sculptor stamped life into it Implies that the head remains, but is broken, and that the head itself has fallenĪnthropomorphism - Line 5 - "sneer of cold command" The image of the legs being huge, but without a body, creates a sense of incompleteness or destructionĬreates a sense of abrupt stopping eminent throughout the poem Imagery - Line 2 - "vast and trunkless legs of stone" Creates the setting of an ancient civilization such as Greece, Rome, or in this case, Egypt
